Marie Fredriksson was born Gun-Marie Fredriksson, on May 30, 1958, in Össjo, Sweden. She was the youngest of father Gösta and mother Inez's five children. In 1962, when Marie was four, the family relocated to Östra Ljungby, in Skåne (southern Sweden).
While still a little girl, Marie decided she wanted to be a musician, and learned to sing and play the piano. Instructed at a tiny, 10-student schoolhouse, Marie continued to write and play music.
